LEAF Project - Vertical Garden...
As part of our LEAF Project for this year, our school took the initiative of planting some vertical gardens. As our school lacks garden space, we were lucky to be introduced to Mr Peter Llewellyn who suggested the use of vertical gardens for the children to try their hand at growing edible plants themselves. We were also fortunate to receive financial help from Eco Gozo to purchase four units of these vertical gardens. Mr Llewellyn met some of our students to explain to them how they could experiment with different growing mediums to grow different plants. We used normal plant compost, coconut coir and clay balls in the towers, and planted strawberries, lettuce, garlic, coriander, rosemary, parsley, celery, rucola, beans and marrow. Mr Frank Farrugia helped us to choose the best plants and provided many of them himself. The students are lovingly caring for the plants, watering them regularly as they watch them grow. They will also be checking to see which growing medium is the best for different vegetables and herbs.
